This is a wild cousin of the much more tame European species of Valerian (V. officianalis), which is the standard variety sold in health-food stores. This wild species is probably the strongest, overtly sedative herb. It’s just a couple steps shy of pharmaceutical strength. In fact, you don’t want to use too much of this because it can leave you with a slightly druggy, hung-over feeling the next morning. But used occasionally, it can be just the thing when you can’t get to sleep and is also excellent in combination with Skullcap when the night-time anxieties come calling.
